First Island Checklist: Skyblock Tips for Your First Hour

Before you start: every server sets up its starter island a little differently, so treat this as a flexible plan rather than strict rules. It's general advice for the genre, not a walkthrough of one particular server.

1. Look before you leap

Take a slow look around Before breaking anything, check what your starter island gives you: blocks, a tree, a chest, maybe a few tools. Read any welcome message or tutorial too.
Find the island menu Most Skyblock servers have an island menu or command for things like going home and inviting friends. It's often /is or /island, but check the server's help to be sure.
Empty the starter chest carefully Take things out one at a time and think before you place them. In classic setups, that chest holds the ingredients for your whole first day.
Crouch near the edges Sneaking stops you from walking off the side of a block, on both Java and Bedrock. Make it a habit whenever you build near the void.

2. Make your island renewable

Replant every sapling Trees are your only wood supply at the start. Chop, collect the saplings that drop from the leaves and plant them straight back. Never break your last tree without a sapling in hand.
Treat dirt like treasure Every block of dirt is room for a tree or a crop. Don't toss any away, and think twice before covering it with something else.
Build a safe cobblestone generator Lava flowing into flowing water makes cobblestone, which comes back after you mine it. Water poured onto a lava source turns it into obsidian instead, so keep the two apart and look up a simple design for your edition before placing your only bucket of lava.
Start a small farm Till a few blocks of dirt beside water and plant whatever seeds you have. Farmland within four blocks of water stays hydrated, so one water block can look after a small patch.

3. Stay safe and tidy

Light up your island Hostile mobs spawn in the dark, and on a small island that means right next to you. A few torches around your platform make nights much calmer.
Fence off the drop A ring of fences, walls or slabs around the edge stops accidental falls, and it's one less thing to worry about when a creeper sneaks up.
Set up storage early A couple of labelled chests saves a lot of hunting later. Group your blocks, food and tools so you can find things fast.
Know what the void does In vanilla Minecraft, falling into the void kills you and anything you were carrying is gone for good. Servers can handle it differently, but don't count on getting your items back.

4. Grow with other people

Say hello in chat Other islanders are the best guide you'll find. A friendly hello can turn into tips, trades or a new island neighbour.
Invite a friend Skyblock is more fun with company. Many servers let you add friends to your island so you can build together; look in the island menu for the option.

Check when the season started Seasonal servers start new seasons on a schedule. 5. On a skills-based server

Sample every activity On skills Skyblock, farming, foraging and fighting all move you forward. Spend a little time on each so you learn the skill menus and find what you enjoy.
Gear up before bosses Bosses are a goal, not a first-day errand. Build up your tools and armour first, then go for it.
